HRC is an organization that works to "achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans." A headline of theirs April 24 reads, "Momentum builds toward (gay) marriage in Illinois."
They don't have the votes yet, but that doesn't keep them from trying. That April 24 article says, "It's more critical than ever that every shift at every phone bank is filled. Every lost hour on the phone could translate into the loss of a potential yes vote."
Lynne Bowman who wrote the article also wrote this:
"Since January, I've been on the ground in Illinois helping lead the field effort of the Illinois Unites for Marriage coalition. I've seen the incredible 15-member field team at work and I've met awesome volunteers at our activities across the state. I know the work HRC is doing in partnership with our friends at Equality Illinois, Lambda Legal, Freedom to Marry and the ACLU is vitally important in impacting the final outcome of this legislation. We need you in order to push this over the finish line."
This is the same strategy that just got gay marriage through the last holdout state in the upper Northeast, Rhode Island.
And what are natural marriage supporters doing here in Illinois? There is no coordinated effort that I'm aware of. Do we just cross our fingers and hope our legislators stand strong?
