Motorcyclist accused of passing deputy, swerving into oncoming traffic

A motorcyclist from St. Jacob is facing felony charges of drunken driving after allegedly passing a sheriff deputy's marked squad car at speeds more than 70 mph Sunday night.

Arnet E. Morelan, 57, of 310 Napoleon Street, has been charged with aggravated driving while under the influence of alcohol and issued multiple traffic citations. Morelan was previously convicted of driving under the influence in 1990 and 2009 in Madison County, according to a statement from the Madison County Sheriff's Department.

Morelan allegedly passed the deputy's car about 11 p.m. while traveling east on Highway 40 near Troy, swerving into the oncoming traffic lane in a no-passing zone and passing the marked squad car.

Morelan appeared to under the influence of alcohol and refused to submit to field sobriety and blood-alcohol testing, according to the sheriff's department. His driver's license was also revoked at the time of the stop.
