Belleville carjacking suspect captured after chase

— Police officers chased a carjacking suspect through the metro-east before capturing him after he bailed out of the car near East St. Louis.

Belleville Detective Mark Heffernan said a man was driving on West Main Street at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday when he pulled into the parking lot of Circle K convenience store at 9618 W. Main St. to answer a cellphone call.

"A male subject displayed a handgun and made the victim drive around the area for a while before he eventually told him to get out of the car," Heffernan said.

A Belleville officer spotted the car with the subject driving westbound on Illinois 15 and attempted to stop it. The vehicle fled into East St. Louis.

Heffernan said several agencies assisted with the chase and when the subject bailed out of the vehicle near a wooded area, he was quickly apprehended and brought to the Belleville Police Department.

There were no injuries and Heffernan said the police department expects to present the case to prosecutors on Friday.
