Art on the Square schedule

What: The 12th annual Art on the Square, ranked the No. 2 art show in the nation (Art Fair Sourcebook), features 105 artists from all over the world, who will display and sell their work.

When: 5-9 p.m. Friday, May 17; 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday; 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday

Where: Belleville Public Square and the first blocks of East and West Main streets and North and South Illinois streets.

Free shuttle: St. Clair County Transit bus picks up at the Scheel Street MetroLink station 10 minutes before the start of the fair each day and will transport fairgoers every 15 minutes. The final shuttle will leave East Main and Jackson 20 minutes after closing each day.

Make It and Take It

Children's Garden

St. Elizabeth's Hospital: Children can create a paper plate mosaic masterpiece, including their favorite healthy foods, while learning about healthy eating choices and exercise. A "My Plate" coloring page will be provided.

Masterworks Chorale and Children's Choruses: Create and paint your own maraca, complete with noisemakers to play along with the beat.

Southwestern Illinois College: Use an assortment of recycled items to create a one-of-a-kind work of art.

First Presbyterian Community Preschool: Make a bowler hat from newspapers and add fun decorations.

The Tourism Bureau of IllinoiSouth: A large, blank mural will be available for children to design and color.

Sips 'n Splatters: Join Belleville artist David Brandt in creating a canvas mosaic. Paint canvas squares; to contribute to a much larger painting made from these squares.

Puzzling Art: Belleville schools created art depictions of Belleville landmarks. The art works were collected and cut into large puzzle pieces that can be reassembled by children during the fair weekend. At the end of the fair, the pieces will be put together permanently and will be displayed as part of the city's 2014 celebration of the 200th anniversary of its founding.

Participating restaurants will have food available for purchase during all fair hours.

High School Exhibit

Students from more than 30 Southern Illinois High Schools participated in the High School Art Competition. Their artwork will be on display from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Clair County Atrium (lobby of Regions Bank, 19 Public Square). The awards ceremony will be under the Main Tent at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Gateway East Artists Guild

Demonstration Tent

Members will demonstrate their art techniques at the guild tent on West Main Street.
