Police have charged a Washington Park man in connection with a carjacking Wednesday night in Belleville.

Timothy L. Allen, 31, of 1252 N. 49th St., is charged with one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking and one count of aggravated fleeing and eluding. He is in custody at the Belleville Jail. His bail has been set at $750,000.

Police officers chased the suspect late Wednesday night through the metro-east before capturing him after he bailed out of the car near East St. Louis.

Belleville Detective Mark Heffernan said a man was driving on West Main Street at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday when he pulled into the parking lot of Circle K convenience store at 9618 W. Main St. to answer a cellphone call.

A Belleville officer spotted the car with the subject driving westbound on Illinois 15 and attempted to stop it. The vehicle fled into East St. Louis.

Heffernan said several agencies assisted with the chase. When the subject bailed out of the vehicle near a wooded area, he was apprehended and brought to the Belleville Police Department.

No one was injured.
