Lancers, Panthers and Tigers all claim sectional team titles

The Belleville East Lancers, O'Fallon Panthers and Edwardsville Tigers all won team titles in boys tennis sectionals Saturday.

The Lancers won the Belleville West Sectional with 25 points. The host Maroons and the Mascoutah Indians tied for second with 10 points.

The Lancers will be sending two singles players and two doubles to the state tournament next week in the Chicago suburbs, where Arlington Heights serves as host.

Mascoutah senior Josh Lightner won the singles competition by beating East's Aaron Skaer 6-3, 6-5.

East's Zach Fields took third by beating Althoff's Joey Bartholomew 6-0, 6-0.

The Lancers' doubles team of Adam Youck and Lucas Birk beat West's combo of Cole Henke and Adam Seppi 6-2, 6-2 in the final.

The Lancers' doubles team of Chase Stumne and Jacob Hamilton also qualified for state. They beat Waterloo's Damon Lange and Clayton Bourgeois in the third-place match.

At the Centralia Sectional, O'Fallon edged out Centralia 23-17 for the team title.

The Panthers' Taylor Rutz and Neal Shelkar took the doubles title by beating Olney's Nick Kuhl and Derek Walker 7-6, 6-2.

Centralia junior Ben Urshan took top honors in singles by beating O'Fallon's J.D. White 6-0, 6-1.

The Panthers' Mehal Amin placed third by beating Highland's Evan Duft 6-3, 6-2.

Centralia's Jake Casner and Chris Smith claimed third place in doubles with a forfeit victory over O'Fallon's Nick Mullen and Nikhil Shekar.

The Tigers, led by Brandon Harris in singles and Jack Desse and Logan Ware in doubles, piled up 34 points in the Alton Regional.

Triad was second with 23 points and Alton was third with 21.

Harris beat Triad's Dylan Faulkenburg 6-2, 6-0 to take the singles title, while Desse and Ware outlasted Edwardsville teammates Jared Zurliene and Jake Geriching 6-3, 0-6, 6-1 in doubles.

Triad's Zach Bennett beat Edwardsville's Zach Bryant 6-4, 6-2 for third place.

The third-place double match was an all-Alton affair as the Redbirds' Alex Willis and Carl Stradal beat teammates Kain Henson and Jackson Scheiter 6-4, 6-2.
