Dr. Savoy Brummer, of the Emergency Department Medical Director at Memorial Hospital in Belleville, has received the ED Medical Director of the Year Award from Blue Jay Consulting, the Emergency Medicine Foundation and the American College of Emergency Physicians.
Brummer was recognized for his department's recent reduction in time to providers to 17 minutes -- an 80 percent decrease --and the department's left without being seen rate fall to 0.8 percent. Brummer recently sat down to talk with business writer Will Buss about his newly bestowed honor:
How did you find out about this award?
"I got a call in the middle of my shift. I heard the phone ring and I answered it and the voice on the other end said 'you won.' I said, 'no way,' and he said, 'yes, you won.'"
How do you feel about receiving this recognition?
"It's really a team award, even though one person is chosen. But everyone at Memorial put in the time to make it happen. It's a big deal."
How long have you been at Memorial Hospital?
"This is my second year."
What is your job?
"I oversee all of Memorial's emergency care, operations of the department and physicians."
How long have you worked in hospitals?
"I finished my residency in 2005. I have practiced in emergency medicine since then."
What brought you to the metro-east?
"I was working in Los Angeles when I got a call asking if I would like to work closer to home. I am originally from Arkansas. I said that would be great."
What do you enjoy most about your work?
"I enjoy working with the people at Memorial. My colleagues at Memorial are great and I get to talk to various people who work here. I get to go out and meet various people here. I feel like I learn something new here every day."
