Search called off for man after car rolls into Mississippi River

Rescue crews called off a search for an occupant of a car that went into the Mississippi River near the Merchants Bridge, according to TV reports.

KDSK reported a man was fishing under the Merchants Bridge near downtown St. Louis when he left to get something from his vehicle. For unknown reasons, the vehicle rolled into the Mississippi River with the man inside.

The report of the car in the water came in at about 1:45 p.m. The St. Louis Fire Department had a rescue boat in the water shortly thereafter looking for the car and its driver, according to rescue workers radio traffic. The search was called off by 3:15 p.m.

The Merchants Bridge, built in 1889 is a railroad crossing over the Mississippi just north of the McKinley Bridge. It connects north St. Louis to Madison County.
