Dalton Kuehnel doubled in the seventh inning and scored on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt Monday as Granite City edged Collinsville 2-1 in the Class 4A O'Fallon Regional.
"We played 24 innings this year and the difference between our two teams is one run," Granite City coach John Moad said of the parity between his club and the Kahoks (16-11). "We're very evenly matched and we feel very fortunate to get out of that one with a win, but we've lost a lot of games like that this year.
"It's good to get a win like this and hopefully this will lead to more."
Granite City ace Austin Buzick (3-4) allowed a run in the first before shutting down the Kahoks the rest of the way. He allowed five hits while striking out five and walking two.
Kuehnel scored both runs, also being driven home in the fifth on a game-tying RBI single by Jordan Askins.
Granite City (15-20) moves on to play at top-seeded O'Fallon (23-12) in a 4 p.m. game Wednesday. O'Fallon won both regular-season meetings between the clubs, 5-3 and 6-4.
"Our conference is strong from top to bottom and I don't think anybody is surprised by anybody getting beat or anybody winning a big game," Moad said.
Collinsville junior Tanner Houck also pitched well, but took the complete-game loss as the Warriors outhit the Kahoks 9-5.
Granite City's Jake Daily was 2-for-3 with a double and Brian Nemsky was also 2-for-3.
Collinsville scored its first-inning run on three hits.
Mascoutah 6, Cahokia 2
Zach Lindsay struck out six and allowed three hits in six innings as Mascoutah advanced in the Class 3A Columbia Regional with a victory over Cahokia.
Cahokia had a 1-0 lead with ace Tim Nicholson on the mound, but Mascoutah scored twice in the fourth to take the lead, then added one in the fifth and three more in the sixth.
Lindsay was 2-for-3 with a double, while Ryan Netemeyer and Rob Pearson each were 2-for-4 with an RBI. Austin Waugh also drove in a run for the Indians.
Mascoutah (20-14) travels to top-seeded Columbia (22-1) for a 4:30 p.m. semifinal game Wednesday.
Freeburg 10, East St. Louis 0

Freeburg (20-14) will take on No. 2 seed Waterloo (22-9) in a 4:30 p.m. game Thursday in Columbia.
