Led by the doubles team of Jack Desse and Logan Ware, the Edwardsville Tigers remained in the hunt for a trophy after Thursday's opening day of the IHSA state tennis tournament.
Showing the form which earned them the Southwestern Conference title, Desse and Ware roared to three straight-set wins as they led the way for metro-east entries competing in the Chicago suburbs.
Desse and Ware will take on Jeremy Dixon and Graham Lehman of Oak Park-River Forest in a round of 16 match beginning at 9 a.m. Friday.
Led by its top doubles combination, Edwardsville has 16 points and is in sixth place in the team competition.
Perennial state power (Darien) Hinsdale Central leads with 24 points, followed by Lake Forest with 22 and New Trier with 20.
Edwardsville has three entries still alive in the tournament.
In addition to Desse and Ware, the doubles combination of Jake Gingerich and Jared Zurliene, along with singles player Brandon Harris, will play consolation-round matches Friday.
SWC runner-up Belleville East also has two entries in the back draw.
Sophomore Aaron Skaer won three of four matches, while the doubles combo of Adam Youck and Lucas Birk went 2-1 on Friday.
