Abuse of state administrative leave must end

May 24, 2013

I was disturbed to see a recent news report that exposed major abuses of the state's paid administrative leave policy. This abuse is a very serious problem and I am working to end this practice immediately.

It should come as no surprise that this government waste and fraud came to my attention when I read about one Chicago-area worker who has been on leave for two years. He collected more than $85,000 last year without having to go to work. Paid administrative leave is meant to be used for serious allegations of workplace wrongdoing and should last only a few weeks, not several years.

House Resolution 308 is a measure I am supporting that can help illuminate problems in the inefficient paid leave system, increase oversight and protect taxpayer dollars.

Any parent will tell you that rewarding bad behavior encourages it. It's time we put our foot down.
