Left-hander John Gast was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday by the St. Louis Cardinals, who recalled rookie right-hander Michael Blazek from Class AA Springfield.
Gast suffered a strained left shoulder in his start Saturday in Los Angeles, where he lasted just one innings in the Cardinals' 5-3 loss.
Blazek, 24, will wear No. 67. The Cardinals' 35th-round pick in the 2007 draft was 0-0 with a 0.92 ERA and seven saves in 17 games at Springfield. He has allowed just 11 hits in 19 2/3 innings, with 10 walks and 26 strikeouts.
Blazek becomes the ninth pitcher 25-or-younger pitcher to join the Cardinals this season. The Cardinals' pitching staff already has used a major league-leading six rookies who have combined for 11 wins.
