KANSAS CITY, Mo. --Right-hander Victor Marte was recalled by the St. Louis Cardinals early Monday morning when rookie Carlos Martinez was optioned to Class AAA Memphis.

Marte, 32, will be in uniform and wearing No. 66 when the Cardinals open a two-game set in Kansas City on Monday afternoon.

Marte was 1-0 with a 2.78 ERA and 10 saves in 20 games for Memphis, with 23 strikeouts in 22 1/3 innings.

Marte was 3-2 with a 4.91 ERA in 48 games last season with St. Louis. He was with the Royals in 2009 and 2010.

Martinez made seven relief appearances for the Cardinals following his call-up May 3. He had nine strikeouts in eight innings.

Martinez's return to Memphis means he can rejoin the starting rotation. He is one of the Cardinals' top prospects, and the club still envisions him as being a starter at the major-league level.
