Cardinals send Cleto back to Memphis, replace him with lefty Kevin Siegrist

News-DemocratJune 6, 2013

— Maikel Cleto's stay with the St. Louis Cardinals was brief and ineffective.

Cleto was option back to Class AAA Memphis on Thursday after just one day at the big-league level. Cleto allowed five runs, all earned, in 2 1/3 innings of the Cardinals' 10-3 loss to Arizona on Wednesday.

He allowed Paul Goldschmidt's grand slam in the seventh that gave the Diamondbacks a 7-1 lead. Cleto has allowed seven home runs in 15 2/3 innings with the Cardinals in the past three seasons.

The Cardinals recalled their minor-league Pitcher of the Month for May, left-hander Kevin Siegrist, from Memphis to replace Cleto.

Siegrist, 23, has split the season between Class AA Springfield and Memphis, going 2-1 with a 1.95 ERA in 27 2/3 innings while striking out 44. He will wear No. 46.

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Siegrist was the Cardinals' 41st-round selection in the 2008 draft. He becomes the 22nd pitcher to appear on the Cardinals roster this season and will the eighth rookie to make his major-league debut.

The Cardinals have used 35 players this season and one player, including pitcher Michael Blazek, who did not make a game appearance.
