New York Mets DFA former Cardinals P/OF Rick Ankiel

The New York Mets, according to ESPN, will designate former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher turned outfielder Rick Ankiel for assignment.

Ankiel, in 19 games with New York hit .194 with two home runs and seven runs batted in. He batted .194 in 25 games with the Houston Astros before being released about a month ago. Ankiel had five home runs and 11 RBIs while playing in Houston.

The Mets decided to let Ankiel go to make room for Kirk Nieuwenheis on their major league roster.

Ankiel has played for the Cardinals, Royals, Braves, Nationals, Astros and Mets in a career that spans parts of 11 seasons.
