Police have arrested a woman who they say fatally stabbed her husband in the building where they lived.

Tammy Carpenter, 44, was charged Sunday with first-degree murder. Her bail was set at $1 million, and she was being held in the East St. Louis city jail.

Carpenter is charged with killing her husband, 58-year-old Jerome Carpenter.

East St. Louis Police Chief Michael Floore said police received a 911 call reporting a disturbance in which a male victim was believed to be down at the Ruggeri building at 2901 Waverly Ave.

The call came in at 2:45 a.m. Saturday, Floore said.

"When officers arrived at the building they learned that the suspect and the victim had gotten into an argument and the victim was stabbed. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead," Floore said.
