A Granite City liquor thief is out on his third strike at Walmart.

On Sunday afternoon, according to the Madison County Sheriff's Department, deputies were called to the store at 6660 Godfrey Road in Godfrey because a man was trying to steal a grocery cart load of food and alcohol.

The man was recognized by staff members as the suspect in two previous thefts from the store. He was seen getting into a maroon Ford in which he fled the scene.

A Jersey County Sheriff's Department deputy later arrested Shawn P. McCarthy, 32 of 1100 Niedringhaus Avenue, in the vehicle believed to be used in the thefts. He was charged with a felony charge of burglary and his bond was set at $50,000.

The previous Walmart thefts took place on May 25 and 26.
