A sign welcomes visitors through the Belleville Gate entrance at Scott Air Force Base.

Air Mobility Command officially presented to St. Louis-area leaders with this year's award for its outstanding support of Scott Air Force Base.

The Abilene Trophy was unveiled in an outdoor ceremony at noon Tuesday at the Scott Field Air Heritage Park outside the base's Seibert Road gate. Also known as the Air Mobility Command Community Support Award, this honor has been awarded each year since 1999 to those communities that demonstrate the most extensive support for airmen and their families.

The Leadership Council Southwestern Illinois, based in Edwardsville, spearheaded this year's nomination on behalf of the St. Louis region, which includes St. Louis and St. Louis County in Missouri, and St. Clair and Madison counties in Illinois.

The traveling trophy is of a bronze eagle with its wings spread in flight. The award will be on display at various locations through the base and metro area throughout the year.
