The list of major roadways under construction project slated this summer in the metro-east is a little larger than last year.

Throughout the Illinois Department of Transportation's 11-county District 8 region -- which includes St. Clair, Madison and Monroe counties --are as many as 150 different roadwork projects under way.

Illinois Department of Transportation District 8 Construction Engineer Ted Nimsky said there is more work on Interstate 64 and Interstate 270 than there was last year. He also mentioned projects on Interstate 55, north of Edwardsville and around Hamel.

While some construction is just getting started, others began last summer and continue. One ongoing project that is nearing completion is on Interstate 64 near the interchange at Interstate 255. The ongoing Mississippi River Bridge construction includes new interchanges with Interstate 55-70 and Interstate 64 to the new bridge, which is expected to open to traffic by early next year.

Nimsky said commuters can expect more traffic restrictions along major highways this summer than last year.

"Yes, I think this is," he said. "With the impact to traffic, what we're seeing now is that it will have more impact to traffic than what was happening last year."

On Thursday, Gov. Pat Quinn announced a $3.6 million capital investment to widen Illinois 3 at Waterloo from the relocated Vanderbrook Drive to South Market Street.
