After reading the BND article in regard to the $840,000 in grant money wasted on landscaping the Interstate 64 interchange, I would like to eloborate on comments made by our local officials.
Obviously Fairview Heights Mayor Gail Mitchell believing that "it's a really good project" is ridiculous. After the $840,000 is wasted planting all of the unneeded shrubs, the city will have to maintain it, which will take approximately 40 to 60 man hours per week. I suppose it's a really good project if you work for the city.
I would like to ask state Rep. Jay Hoffman how this is positve for Fairview Heights? He probably meant to say that this is positive for the east end of Fairview Heights. And Beautification Committee Chairman Patrick McCarthy's comment that "everybody at large benefits from a major interchange beatification" proves that he is either quite naive or underinformed.
Whatever the case, wasting $840,000 in federal tax dollars is neither sensible nor productive. In fact, this will be counterproductive in the long run after the city spends hundreds of thousands of dollars to maintain this.
Obviously all three of these men have a huge disconnect from the rest of this city and its needs.
