Gateway Grizzlies starting pitcher Tim Brown worked 8 2/3 strong innings and the Grizzlies held on for a 2-0 victory against the Southern Illinois Miners Thursday night at Rent One Park in Marion.
Brown (4-2) allowed eight hits and struck out four batters while walking only one en route to moving to 4-0 on the road. The right-hander from St. Louis threw 129 pitches. He gave way to Richard Barrett for the final out with runners on the corners in the ninth inning.
Barrett picked up his league-leading ninth save.
Gateway (19-10) avoided the series sweep and snapped a three-game losing streak. The shutout win was the Grizzlies third of the season.
Max Ayarza drove in his first run of the season in the fifth on a groundout and Jon Myers plated a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly for the only runs of the game.
Southern Illinois (16-14) outhit Gateway eight to four in the game.
Jonathan Johnson, Chris McClendon, Antone DeJesus and Michael Pair had the Gateway hits, which were all singles.
The Grizzlies, who lead the West Division, continue their road trip Friday with game one of a weekend series at Joliet. Right-hander Ja'Vaun West (4-1) will start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. at Silver Cross Field.
