A 76-year-old Jerseyville man died Monday morning in a tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 270 in Pontoon Beach.

The Madison County coroner's office reported that Kenneth L. Ashford, driving a 2000 International tractor-trailer, was eastbound on the interstate and took the southbound exit ramp to Illinois 111. For an unknown reason, the truck left the road and flipped, ending up in the southbound lanes of Illinois 111.

Coroner Steve Nonn said Ashford was hauling some steel equipment to Granite City Steel.

Ashford was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash.

The wreck happened about 11 a.m. Ashford was pronounced dead at the scene by Investigator Kelsey Wofford of the coroner's office.

The crash was being investigated by Illinois State Police. Nonn said an autopsy and routine toxicology tests would be conducted.
