EDWARDSVILLE — The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's tennis team has announced the signing of Matthew Hutchinson, a native of Barbados who will join the team this fall.
"We're extremely happy for Matthew to join our program," head coach Jason Coomer said. "He has not only demonstrated his commitment on the court but also in the classroom, which is what we expect from our players."
Hutchinson most recently trained at the prestigious Club Med Academy in Port St. Lucia, Fla., home to some of the top junior players from around the world. Prior to departing for the U.S., Hutchinson was the top-ranked junior player in Barbados.
"Matthew has received world class training at Club Med Academy, which has allowed him to elevate his game to the level it's at today," Coomer said. "We look forward to building on the experiences he's had in Port St. Lucia."
The 6 foot, 1 inch left-hander has been ranked as high as 953 on the International Tennis Federation world junior rankings, and has recently played in ITF junior tournaments in the U.S. and abroad.
Last fall, Hutchinson teamed with Yannik James of Grenada to win the St. Vincent ITF Doubles Tournament. He has lived in Port St. Lucia for the past three years, where he attended Morningside Academy.
"Matthew has the opportunity to make an immediate impact on our team," Coomer said. "We're excited to help him continue to develop as a player and as an individual.
