The old Kmart store in Fairview Heights is being demolished by the Hayden Wrecking Company. It was formerly a Venture store, and the building was built in the 1960's, making it one of the oldest commercial buildings in the area near St. Clair Square mall. A new Sports Authority store will be built on the site once it is cleared of all debris. Both the Office Max store at the south, and the Petco store at the north remain open for business during the demolition work. A new Office Max will also be built adjacent to Petco, and then more demolition will take place where the current Office Max stands. The new Office Max building will be about 15,000 square feet in size, which is roughly 2/3 the size of the existing one. Other tenants will also lease retail space that will be part of the central Sports Authority complex.
