Crime is the enemy in East St. Louis, not complaints

June 30, 2013

Lillian Parks, the mother of East St. Louis Mayor Alvin Parks', said that residents who complain about the city's lack of economic opportunities are their own worst enemies.

If anything, the people of East St. Louis complain too little about the city's condition rather than too much. Residents for years have put up with leaders who have failed to protect the public's safety, encourage legitimate business growth and adequately educate the children.

So we were happy to see residents object when Mayor Parks proposed the disastrous idea of an entertainment district with all-night clubs. Had that proposal gone through, it surely would have led to an increase in violent crime and made the city's future prospects that much bleaker.

Criminals and apathetic residents who accept the status quo are the real enemies of East St. Louis.
