Alcohol may have caused a head-on collision Sunday night in Madison County that seriously injured both drivers.

Brittany L. Miller, 23, of Alhambra, was charged with improper lane usage and driving under the influence of alcohol in connection with the crash that happened about 7 p.m. Sunday on Frey Meadows Road, about one-third of a mile west of Weis Road, according to an Illinois State Police news release.

Miller was driving a 2008 Pontiac G6 west on Frey Meadows when she is accused of drifting into the eastbound lane.

Anthony M. Zajac, 22, of Pocahontas, was driving east on Frey Meadows Lane, approaching the Pontiac. Zajac swerved to the left into the westbound lane to avoid a collision. Miller is reported to have swerved back into the westbound lane striking Zajac's vehicle head-on on the north shoulder of the roadway.

Zajac's truck rolled off the roadway to the north and he was ejected from his vehicle.

Both drivers suffered serious injuries. Miller was flown from the scene by helicopter to St. Louis University Hospital. Zajac originally was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Highland by ambulance and then later transported to St. Louis University Hospital.

Miller was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to police. She was charged in connection with improper lane usage and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Zajac was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to police.
