Area fishing report

July 3, 2013

Carlyle Lake (Carlyle): Largemouth bass are fair and can be taken using cranks fished along rocks. Catfish are very good. They are no longer right on the rocks but are still very active. Night crawlers, cheese baits, cut bait and leeches are doing well from the bank. Boaters are catching fish drifting with bait shrimp. Crappie are fair' Catches are still very spradic since the lake is so high. White bass are good. They have finally turned on in the lake; slab spoons or Little Georges coupled with curly tails are producing well.-- Henkel's Bait & Tackle Inc.

Carlyle Lake Spillway: White bass are excellent on rooster tails coupled with curly tails or tube jigs. Night fishermen are using the submersible lights and minnows and tying off on the buoys. Catfish are very good; shad, nightcrawlers and cheese bait are doing well. Crappie are very good. Most crappie coming from the spillway are being caught on minnows. Sauger bite is still going strong from the bridge to the buoys. -- Henkel's Bait & Tackle Inc.

Rend Lake (Ina): The crappie bite is good on stake beds nd brush piles on the main lake. A lot of the beds are loaded with fish but expect to catch a bunch of small ones. Jigs and minnows seem to be working equally well. Catfish bite is really good. A lot are bring caught in the back of necks in shallow water. Creeks leading into the lake are producing a lot of fish. My choices of baits are shad gut, leeches, shrimp or nightcrawlers. Bass are being caught in shallow bushes/laydowns in 1 to 3 feet of water pitching soft plastics and spinner baits. Fish are moving toward the rocks and crankbaits around the rocks are most popular right now. Bluegill are being caught in shallow water and along the rocks on regular old worms.-- Clint Taylor, Crappie Xtreme Guide Service.

Silver Lake (Highland): Lake remains full and murky. Water temps. have been in the upper 70's. Catfish have been steadily being caught on cut bait and stink bait. All other fishing is slow. -- Colby Shrumpf, www.colbyschrumpf.com

Mississippi River (Grafton): Crappie are fair with lots of minnows being sed. Loof for fish near deeper brush in 10 to 14 feet of water. Bluegill are good. Cast a worm under a bobber near weed beds, around docks or cover. Channel catshif are good. Catfish Charlies and Super Spike are working great. Some successful backwater fishermen. -- Cassens Bait Shop

Coffeen Lake: Water is stained. Largemouth bass are excellent using topwater and plastic worms in the early morning. Channel catfish are good using nightcrawlers and cut bait.
