Clayton Mortensen, traded by the Cardinals for Matt Holliday, demoted

Posted by Scott Wuerz on July 3, 2013

Former Cardinals RHP Clayton Mortensen has been demoted to the minors by the Boston Red Sox after clearing waivers.

Mortensen, 28, made his MLB debut with St. Louis in 2009. He was traded to the Oakland athletics as part of the package that brought Matt Holliday to the Cardinals. The Athletics later traded Mortensen to Colorado and Colorado sent him to Boston.

He was 1-1 with a 3.21 ERA last season with the Red Sox. But this year has been a struggle with an ERA well over 5.00

Holliday won't be playing in the majors knight, either. He is out of the recently-posted Cardinals lineup because of a pinched nerve in his neck.
