Family's July 4th party leads to killing in East St. Louis

News-DemocratJuly 5, 2013

A family gathering for Independence Day led to an argument that led to a fatal stabbing late Thursday in East St. Louis.

Stabbed to death was Demetrice L. McDowell, 32, of 632 Post Place in East St. Louis, said East St. Louis Police Chief Michael Floore. Police are seeking two people for questioning.

At 11:25 p.m. Thursday McDowell was at a relative's house at 430 N. 11th St. for a family celebration. The front yard was littered with fireworks debris.

"He and another relative got into an argument, which led to the stabbing," Floore said.

McDowell was dead when police arrived. The knife was not recovered and Illinois State Police are helping the effort to find two people for questioning, Floore said.

McDowell occasionally lived at the relative's house, Floore said.

Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to call East St. Louis Police at (618) 482-6700 or Illinois State Police at (618) 346-3990.
