Police investigating attempted robbery at Collinsville Walmart

Police are investigating an apparent attempt by thieves to rob the Collinsville Walmart.

According to police, employees heard noises coming from the roof of the store at about 3:30 a.m. Monday and called authorities. Officers discovered a hatch on the roof had been opened. They later found evidence that someone had attempted to cut through the ceiling above a room where money is kept.

Police were at the store Monday morning in the Collinsville Crossing shopping center along Illinois 157. The Collinsville Fire Department was also called in to use its thermal imaging cameras to try to determine if someone was in between the roof and the ceiling.

Police set up a perimeter around the building to watch for someone trying to climb down from the roof. They believe that the suspect was spooked and left before officers arrived.

Police believe the suspect may be a former employee or relative of someone connected to the store due to the knowledge the suspect has of Walmart's internal procedures, according to police Lt. Todd A. Link.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Collinsville Police Department at 344-2131 or Crimestoppers at 866-371-8477.
