Police: Walmart burglar may have hit other metro-east stores

News-DemocratJuly 9, 2013

— The man suspected of an attempted burglary at the Collinsville Walmart store also is suspected of multiple other thefts, according to police.

Early Monday morning, employees at the store heard noises on the roof and called police. Officers discovered that someone had opened a hatch on the roof and was attempting to cut through the ceiling into a room where money is kept.

Police are working diligently on the investigation, but do not have a suspect in custody, said Assistant Chief Tom Coppotelli.

Police believe that the man, who has not been identified, may be a former employee or a relative of an employee, and has knowledge about Walmart's internal procedures.

Police found evidence they said indicates the same man has committed thefts at Walmart stores in O'Fallon, Belleville and Litchfield.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Collinsville Police Department at 618-344-2131, ext. 5138, or CrimeStoppers at 866-371-8477.
