Cardinals deal Mitchell Boggs to Colorado Rockies

The Cardinals have dealt embattled reliever Mitchell Boggs to the Colorado Rockies for an exchange of international draft bonus slots, the team reports.

Basically it was a way to get rid of Boggs, whose future with the club was cloudy at best, without just letting him walk away with nothing in return.

There was little chance Boggs, who was fantastic in 2012 as a set-up man in the bullpen with a 2.21 ERA and a 4-1 record, was going to make it back to St. Louis.

This year he was forced to try to step up to the closer role when Jason Motte was lost for the season to an elbow injury. The results were disastrous. He was 0-3 with an 11.05 ERA, 21 hits allowed in 14 2/3 innings and 15 walks issued compared to 11 strikeouts. He allowed nearly 2 1/2 base runners an inning. His constant struggles caused fans to turn against him and it was a high pressure situation in which Boggs couldn't win.

He was demoted to Class AAA Memphis to try to work things out. But when Boggs came back he was no better. And when he was shipped out a second time it was fairly obvious Boggs wasn't going to be back. He was 0-2 with a 5.70 ERA in the minor leagues, allowing 30 hits in 23 2/3 innings.

Boggs received a demotion to Class AA Tulsa in the Rockies organization. It's the first time he's been as low as Class AA since 2007 when he pitched for Springfield. He'll be the oldest pitcher on the roster at 29 years old.

Tulsa's pitching coach, apparently charged with sorting out the troubled right hander's mechanics, is Darryl Scott who pitched in 16 major league games with the Angels back in 1993.
