Carpenter drives in three, Holliday homers as Wainwright wins 12th game of season

— Matt Carpenter had two doubles and three RBIs and Matt Holliday clubbed a two-run homer to support Adam Wainwright on Tuesday as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated Houston 9-5 before 43,836 at Busch Stadium.

How it went

Carpenter doubled and Holliday hit his 13th homer in the first to make it 2-0 against Bud Norris (6-8). Carpenter had a sacrifice fly in the second and a two-run double in the fourth to make it 5-0, and Carlos Beltran followed with an RBI single to make it 6-0. Jon Jay's RBI single past third put St. Louis ahead 7-0 in the fifth. Houston scored its first run in the sixth, but the Cardinals got RBI singles from Allen Craig in the sixth and the eighth.

Wainwright (12-5), who walked one and struck out nine in seven innings, is 13-1 with a 1.57 ERA in his career against the Astros. ... Craig has 71 RBIs in 85 games. ... Carpenter, Craig and David Freese each had three hits. ... Houston scored four in the ninth, forcing the Cardinals to use closer Edward Mujica, who collected his 24th save.
