ST. LOUIS — Matt Carpenter had two doubles and three RBIs and Matt Holliday clubbed a two-run homer to support Adam Wainwright on Tuesday as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated Houston 9-5 before 43,836 at Busch Stadium.

Carpenter doubled and Holliday hit his 13th homer in the first to make it 2-0 against Bud Norris (6-8). Carpenter had a sacrifice fly in the second and a two-run double in the fourth to make it 5-0, and Carlos Beltran followed with an RBI single to make it 6-0. Jon Jay's RBI single past third put St. Louis ahead 7-0 in the fifth. Houston scored its first run in the sixth, but the Cardinals got RBI singles from Allen Craig in the sixth and the eighth.
