ST. LOUIS — Matt Carpenter hit a two-run homer against Wesley Wright in the seventh inning Wednesday night to give the St. Louis Cardinals a 5-4 victory over the Houston Astros before 44,313 at Busch Stadium. Carpenter's homer was his ninth of the season.

In a seesaw game, the Astros took a 2-0 lead in the second on Chris Carter's home run against Shelby Miller and second baseman Carpenter's error. Matt Adams' RBI single in the second against Jordan Lyles made it 2-1, but J.D. Martinez's RBI single in the fifth gave the Astros a 3-1 lead. Matt Holliday had a two-run single in the fifth to pull the Cardinals into a 3-3 tie. Brett Wallace had an RBI single in the seventh against Seth Maness before Carpenter connected against Wright.
By the numbers
