Rascals throttle Grizzlies in series finale

The River City Rascals erupted for a seven-run second inning and cruised to a 12-2 victory against Gateway on Thursday night at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O'Fallon, Mo.

The loss was the Grizzlies (30-18) fifth in their last seven games and their third in the four-game series against the Rascals.

The Grizzlies are now only one a half games ahead of Schaumburg for first place in the West Division.

River City (20-28) scored 10 runs in the first three innings off of Grizzlies starting pitcher Tucker Jensen (4-4).

Jensen surrendered 10 hits and walked four batters in 2 2/3 innings without any strikeouts. The loss was the third for Jensen in three road starts.

River City scored a run in the first, seven in the second and two in the third inning. Danny Canela highlighted the big second inning with a grand slam.

Gateway held a brief 1-0 lead after a half inning. Jet Butler drove in his 31st run of the season on a single to put the Grizzlies on the scoreboard first.

River City tacked on a run in the sixth to take an 11-1 lead and Gateway answered in the seventh with a run on a Landon Hernandez double play groundout.

Sean Borman drove in a run in the eighth for the Rascals to cap off their scoring and make it 12-2.

The Grizzlies return home on Friday when they start a weekend series against the Evansville Otters at GCS Ballpark. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
