Shopping: Donate a handbag to Bags for Wags

News-DemocratJuly 12, 2013

Bags for Wags starts Wednesday and runs through July 20 at Peace by Piece in downtown Belleville. Donate any gently used handbag and get $20 off your next Harveys Seatbeltbag purchase. All bags donated will be part of the shop's silent auction July 22-27, with proceeds going to the Belleville Area Humane Society. So, make sure the bag you bring is nice-looking and useable so lots of money can be raised.

Bedazzle St. Louis Cardinals and Rams fans with your rhinestone-encrusted logo, cross-body bag ($55) from the Basket Case in Belleville. The black bags have a pretty satin lining, a zippered top and front pocket.

Yeesh, Garden Ridge already has some of its artificial Christmas trees up! And Halloween merchandise has taken over a vast part of the store. I'm not ready for any of that. That's why I turned in another direction and found some whimsical bird houses that really are more decorative than actual homes for our feathered friends. Each house is fashioned after a beach shack, with names the Shark Bite Cafe and the Lobster Trap. Tiny surfboards, pelicans, tables and chairs are part of the design. Put one on a shelf for the summer and see how many friends and family will stop and check it out. Each is $14.99 at Garden Ridge in O'Fallon.

Setting up a summer day camp in your backyard for the kids? Go rustic with twig color pencils. A set of a dozen (in 12 colors) in two sizes are $3.99 or $7.99 at World Market in Shiloh. Look for them in the stationery and gift bag section.

It's the end of Dollar Week at Michaels Crafts in Shiloh. Through today, get open stock 12-by-12 paper five sheets for a buck. Sharpies markers are $1 each (with some exceptions). 20 colors of select ribbon are three for a dollar.

Cool idea: The Radio Flyer 4-in-1 Trike (in red) is on sale for $87, regularly $99.99, at Target. It can be a stroller, a steering tricycle, a learning-to-ride trike and a regular trike. It has a harness and wraparound tray (removable) so your child stays put. There's a canopy overhead, too, which can be removed. And even the pedals convert to a footrest when needed. Recommended for children 9 months to 5 years old. A check of local Targets show it is in stock at all stores.
