Workshop to address abuse of the elderly in St. Clair County

News-DemocratJuly 12, 2013

A workshop teaching residents about the pervasive problem of elder abuse will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 16 at Lindenwood University District 201 Conference Room in Belleville.

The workshop "An Age for Justice Stop the Abuse Now!" is sponsored by the Violence Prevention Center, Illinois HealthCare Coalition and Illinois Family Violence Coordinating Council.

"We want to get people to talk about it," said Debra Mize with the Violence Prevention Center. "We estimate 1 in 25 elders are impacted in St. Clair County but it is very underreported. People don't want to talk about it because they are afraid they will end up in a nursing home. Or, they are ashamed."

Retired St. Clair County Judge Otis Lewis will lead the workshop, and social workers, police officers and counselors will be available to answer questions as well.
