C.J. Henry smashed a solo home run in the 11th inning to give the Evansville Otters a 3-2 win against the Gateway Grizzlies on Sunday night at GCS Ballpark at Sauget.
Henry's home run came against Grizzlies reliever Brett Higginbotham (1-2) to start the 11th inning and it gave Evansville its first lead of the game.
With the win, the Otters avoided a series sweep and gave them their first win against the Grizzlies in 2013 in six games.
Gateway (32-19) scored a run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead as Antone DeJesus and Alex Guthrie completed a double steal that scored DeJesus.
Evansville (27-23) answered with a run in the fifth on a Ricardo Lizcano RBI single.
The score stayed tied until the seventh when the Grizzlies rallied for a run on three hits. DeJesus and Guthrie started the inning with singles and Jonathan Johnson drove in DeJesus to give the Grizzlies a 2-1 lead.
Grizzlies starting pitcher Ja'Vaun West pitched eight outstanding innings, allowing only one run on six hits with eight strikeouts.
West was in line for the win until the ninth inning when Ryan Kresky recorded a pinch-hit RBI double against Richard Barrett to tie the game at two and give West a no-decision.
The loss pushed the Grizzlies extra-inning record to 2-3.
DeJesus paced the Grizzlies with three hits while Johnson finished with two.
The Grizzlies are off until Friday for Frontier League All-Star break. Gateway will take on Lake Erie on Friday night at GCS Ballpark. First pitch is set for 7:05.
