A metro-east financial adviser has been recognized for overall excellence among managing directors of Northwestern Mutual.

Chris Lowery has been recognized for overall excellence among managing directors of Northwestern Mutual. Lowery is also a member of Leadership Council Southwestern Illinois, the member-based economic development organization that serves St. Clair and Madison counties. He recently discussed his job and recent honors with business writer Will Buss:

Q: Congratulations on receiving the Outstanding Achievement in Recruiting and Sales Award. How did you earn this honor?

A: "This award recognizes managing directors within Northwestern Mutual who achieve both individual sales goals and organizational recruiting and development goals at a high level."

Q: What is your job at Northwestern Mutual?

A: "I am the managing director. In that role I work both with my own clients, helping them achieve their long-term financial goals and objectives and I am also responsible for growing and developing our overall organization, Northwestern Mutual Fairview Heights."

Q: How long have you been working there?

A: "I started as a financial representative in September 1995. I have been the managing director since October 2006."

Q: How long has the financial firm been at its location in Fairview Heights?

A: "We moved into our new building January 2013. The building is 11,500 square feet and also houses Lowery Benefit Services, an employee benefit services firm. We currently have 22 full-time financial representatives, 18 highly professional staff members and 12 college interns. Our highly successful internship program ranked No. 2 in the country out of 260 Northwestern Mutual District Network offices."

Q: What is your background?

A: "I graduated from Miami University in 1992 with a degree in accounting. I worked for three years for KPMG, a national public accounting firm, in St. Louis, prior to joining Northwestern Mutual. I am a CPA, a chartered life underwriter and a chartered financial consultant."

Q: What goals do you have?

A: "My goals are to continue to grow our district network office into one of the most productive offices in the Northwestern Mutual system, while continuing to grow my own wealth management practice at a high level. We have had some significant growth the last five years, and my focus is on continuing to develop values-driven individuals who professionally and passionately strive to serve our market. Our approach with our clients is goal-focused and planning-driven, rather than being based on some attempt to outguess the economy or markets."

Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?

A: "I enjoy leading an organization of very talented, values-driven individuals who are unified by a common purpose. Our purpose is to be catalysts, inspiring our community to become the most financially secure in the world, serving one person, one family, one business at a time. I also enjoy the enduring relationships I have developed with my clients and other people in our organization over the last 18 years."
