Alton woman charged with drug-induced homicide

A 27-year-old Alton woman has been charged in connection with the heroin overdose death of a 34-year-old man.

Mary Ellen Johnson, also known as Mary Ellen Gregory, has been charged by the Madison County state's attorney's office with drug-induced homicide, a class X felony, and the unlawful delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school.

Johnson is accused of providing heroin to Michael Johnson, no relation, who died after he injected the drug. Mary Ellen Johnson's home is near East Elementary School in Alton.

Mary Ellen Johnson faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted on the drug-induced homicide charge and up to 14 years in prison for the unlawful delivery of a controlled substance charge.

She is in police custody in lieu of a $500,000 bond.
