Edwardsville man accused of stealing family member's knick-knacks

An Edwardsville man has been accused of stealing a family member's knick-knacks while out on parole.

Shawn P. Courto, 29, of 1 Oasis Drive, was charged by the Madison County State's Attorney's Office with theft over $500 after a deputy discovered he had $560 worth of decorative figurines stashed in his car.

Courto was pulled over at 6:15 p.m. Monday by a Madison County Sheriff's Deputy on Illinois 143 because the deputy knew Courto had an active felony warrant out of the Department Corrections for a parole violation, according to Madison County Sheriff's Capt. T. Mike Dixon.

The deputy learned the figurines were owned by a family member of Courto and Courto did not have permission to be in possession of the items.

Courto is being held in the Madison County Jail in lieu of a $35,000 bond.
