Red Cross honors local volunteers

Three metro-east Red Cross volunteers were recently recognized at the annual Volunteer and Community Partner Recognition event held by the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter.

Fairview Heights resident Gloria Besterfield was named the organization's Volunteer of the Year. Besterfield has been a Red Cross volunteer since 1995 and has been instrumental in updating and transferring the records of 2,000 regional volunteers to the new interactive database, Volunteer Connection. Nationwide, the organization has been moving its volunteer information to the database and doing so has been a challenge. Besterfield has been instrumental in making sure the move is successful in St. Louis.

Staff Sgt. Kristen Bolton of Scott Air Force Base received the Blood Drive Volunteer Award for her work as a blood drive coordinator. A volunteer with the Red Cross for two years, Bolton has collected between 75 and 100 units of blood monthly during the blood drives she organizes.

Belleville resident Levering Reynolds was selected to receive the Preparedness and Health and Safety Award. Reynolds was recognized for volunteering to take over health and safety instruction when a staff member left. He taught nearly full time over the last year and is also a key member of the volunteer disaster team.
