Friends and family members will remember 11-year-old Leonard James Smith Jr. of East St. Louis during funeral services Tuesday. Leonard was accidentally shot and killed last week by a 6-year-old friend at a home on North 98th Street in Belleville.

Visitation for Leonard will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pilgrim Green Missionary Baptist Church in East St. Louis with a funeral immediately following. He will be buried at Sunset Gardens of Memory in Millstadt.

Leonard attended fourth-grade last school year at Gordon Bush Elementary School in East St. Louis. His teacher, Cynthia Roller, described Leonard as "a very outgoing young man" and "a very popular boy" with many friends.

"Leonard James was willing to help anyone who needed it at any time," Roller said. "The students and staff at Gordon D. Bush Elementary School will miss Leonard James Smith in the upcoming school year and the years to come."

During his spare time, Leonard enjoyed reading Goosebumps books, drawing and entertaining his peers, Roller said.
