The birth of a Belleville couple's baby on Monday didn't garner nearly as much attention as the royal baby's birth, but the little Belleville girl was nonetheless welcomed into the world with her own crown.
The daughter of Matt and Tasha Gregowicz was born Monday at St. Anthony's Medical Center in St. Louis. The hospital auxiliary there was ready for any babies born on the special day, giving them tiny, crocheted crowns.
The news that people around the world had been anticipating finally arrived in the metro-east Monday afternoon: Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton and Prince William welcomed a baby boy weighing 8 pounds, 6 ounces at 4:24 p.m. The infant's name had not been released as of Monday night.
The Gregowiczes named their their baby girl Skylar, who weighed 7 pounds, 13 ounces.
Bridget Cash of Dupo learned she was pregnant shortly before Kate Middleton announced her own pregnancy. Cash said she followed Kate's pregnancy and wondered if they would have their babies on the same day.
"When they said she was in labor, I thought 'how cool, he'll share a birthday with royalty,'" Cash said.
Cash delivered her son, Landen Michael, by C-section at St. Anthony's Medical Center on Monday. Dad Michael Sheils and big sister, 4-year-old Lillian, helped to welcome their own little prince to the family.
She has started a scrapbook for her Landen and plans to include the little blue crocheted crown in it.
"It's cute," she said of the crown. "He really got treated like royalty. His album is something I will keep around and I'll remind him of him sharing a birthday with the prince. I think he'll enjoy it. I think he'll enjoy looking through his baby books and seeing all the adventures he and the prince had growing up."
While Cash and Sheils knew what they were going to name their son, Cash is eagerly waiting to learn what Kate and Prince William will dub their son.
"I was excited Kate's baby is a boy," Cash said. "I pictured her having a boy."
At least two babies born at Memorial Hospital in Belleville will share the same birthday as the new prince and one baby born at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville.
Barb and Mike Stafford of Waterloo welcomed their third child into the world at 3:07 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth's. Colton Wilbert weighed nearly 8 pounds and was 20 inches tall.
"It's cool to know our little prince shares the birthday of the new royal family addition," Barbara Stafford said.
"I think it's great," Mike Stafford added. He joked on the way to the hospital that they will have their baby the same day as "they do across the pond."
Colton has two older siblings, Drew, 7, and Claire, who will turn 2 on Friday. Barb, 36, and Mike, 43, have been married 11 years, and both work at American Water Company.
The Staffords said they are looking forward to bringing their new bundle of joy home, and Barb said she will have to get him his own little crown.
