Belleville's beauty fades

July 22, 2013

I am a Belleville resident and have lived on 98th Street in West Belleville for more than 50 years. I own a house on the same street that my father owned his house. Now there are empty houses with unkempt yards, litter everywhere you look, potholes and old televisions sitting on the curbside for months at a time.

Now a tragic shooting of an 11-year-old boy by a 6-year-old boy while their parents had a barbecue outside. All I keep thinking is how my father always told us kids how East St. Louis was once a beautiful place to live.

I guess I will be telling the youngsters one day that same thing about Belleville.
