CRESTWOOD — Gateway infielder Chris McClendon sparked his offense with three hits and three runs scored as the Grizzlies cruised by the Windy City ThunderBolts 6-1 on Monday night at Standard Bank Stadium.
Gateway (34-21) recorded 10 hits as a team and McClendon led the way with a 3-for-4, three run and three RBI performance that included two doubles.
Grizzlies starting pitcher Matt Sergey (1-1) tossed six shutout innings to notch his first win with the team. Sergey allowed only two hits while walking four and striking out four.
Brett Higginbotham and Logan Mahon pitched a scoreless inning each for the Grizzlies.
Antone DeJesus started the Grizzlies scoring in the fourth inning with an RBI groundout to bring in McClendon, who doubled.
Jose Flores stroked a two-run single in the sixth inning to extend the Grizzlies lead to 3-0.
In the seventh, McClendon drove in a run on his second double of the game and the Grizzlies scored another run on an error to go up five runs.
McClendon's RBI single in the eighth made it 6-0 before Windy City broke up the shutout in the ninth inning against reliever Jason Sullivan on a Chase Tucker RBI single.
The Grizzlies and ThunderBolts continue their series Tuesday morning. Right-hander Jake Stephens gets the start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 10:35 a.m. from Crestwood.
The Grizzlies don't return to the friendly confines of GCS Ballpark until Sunday night when they take on the Frontier Greys. The first for the game will be at 7:05 p.m.
