Walmart theft suspect arrested after car chase, standoff with police

News-DemocratJuly 23, 2013

Police captured a man suspected of stealing from a Madison County department store early Tuesday morning after a short car chase.

At about 3:30 a.m. officers were called to the Walmart in Wood River. The suspect, described as a white male with long hair and a tattoo on his neck, got into a Ford Contour and fled northbound on Illinois 111 before police could catch up to him.

The suspect turned west on Airline Drive where officers were able to disable his vehicle with Stop Sticks that punctured all four tires. After the car was stopped, the man held what appeared to be a gun to his head and refused to get out of his car.

When he eventually surrendered, at 4:06 a.m., police determined that the weapon was a pellet gun, which is what they believe he stole from Walmart.

The identity of the suspect has not yet been revealed.
