— An Alton man will serve nearly 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to murder.

Madison County Circuit Judge James Hackett on Thursday sentenced Christopher R. Stewart to 27 years in prison, of which Stewart will have to serve 100 percent.

Stewart, 21, pleaded guilty in May to one count of first-degree murder in the death of Carlos Reeves. Without his plea agreement, Steward could have faced up to 40 years in prison.

According to police, both men were present at a party on May 17, 2012, on Brown Street in Alton when Reeves was shot in the head and shoulder. He was declared dead at the scene.
