A small, experimental plane crashed in Jerseyville Thursday morning, according to Jersey County Sheriff Mark Kallal.

The pilot took off from the Jerseyville Municipal Airport just after 10:30 a.m., according to television reports, and headed north, but, shortly after takeoff, his engine began to fail. The single-seat aircraft crashed in a cornfield when the engine died as the pilot tried to bring it back to the airport.

The pilot, whose name was not released, was not seriously injured in the crash.
