Belleville residents: Now's the time to have your say on sales tax

July 28, 2013

Belleville residents: Remember how upset you were when city leaders revived the wheel tax? Well, the city is ready to make permanent the temporary 1/4-cent sales tax that replaced it.

While the sales tax is not as noticeable as writing out a $20 check annually for each wheel sticker, it will take more than twice as much from the public's pocket -- about $1.2 million compared with $500,000.

Both sides make strong arguments. Some of the money will be used to add four police officers, a public priority. But is all the money needed? Should the tax stay temporary and the need for extra revenue re-evaluated in a few years?

Belleville residents who want a say in how much taxes they pay need to attend the public hearing at 7 Monday at City Hall. City residents can influence this decision, but they have to show up to do it.
